About The Program

This 30 credit masters degree (M.Ed) professional studies program in leadership is designed for educators working in the international contexts.

The program is offered jointly by the departments of Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development (OLPD), and Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) in the College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) at the University of Minnesota. The Leadership in Education M.Ed is approved by the Higher Education Learning Commission – North Central and registered with the Council for Private Education, Singapore.

The curriculum emphasizes the integration of teacher leadership, including ways teachers and school administrators work together to promote collaborative school cultures, innovations in curriculum and instruction, data-informed continuous school improvement, and professional development.
Instruction is provided by University of Minnesota faculty with extensive expertise and experience in leadership development, innovations for teaching and learning in diverse school cultures and international education.
Students are admitted as a cohort to provide a supportive, collegial learning community.
Courses are offered in a two or three week format at the Center for American Education, Singapore and online.

Course Delivery Format

The length of this degree program is 18 months. Courses taught on-site will typically be delivered in 2 to 2 1/2 week segments, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings and on Saturdays.

Any student with U.S. bachelor’s degree or comparable foreign degree from an accredited college or university may apply to the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota.

Applications are to be submitted via the ApplyYourself online application system and will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Students are encouraged to submit applications as soon as they are completed. The application deadline is July 15, 2011.

Admission Requirements

A bachelor’s degree with a minimum 2.80 overall grade point average (GPA) from an accredited institution. If you completed a degree in a college or university outside of the U.S., your transcripts will be evaluated for equivalent accreditation and academic performance.
At least two years of classroom teaching experience.

Additional Requirements for Nonnative English Speakers and/or International Students

TOEFL or IELTS: Non native English speakers need to submit an official score report from the Test of English as a foreign language (TOEFL) or the IELTS. If non native English speaking applicants have graduated from a U.S. college or university within the past two years, the TOEFL and/or IELTS requirement will be waived.

Internet based test: 79-80
Paper-based test: 550
Minimum IELTS Score Required: 6.0

Follow application instructions carefully because once your application is submitted, you will no longer have access to add/change application information, or upload required supplemental material.
On the Application Information page under “What type of program are you applying for?” select Masters of Education/Professional Studies program. Then select “Leadership in Education—International Program” as your primary program objective.

Application Materials

All applicants need to submit the following items by uploading them into the online application:

Transcripts or academic records from an accredited college or university for your bachelor’s degree or equivalent and any graduate level courses or degrees you may have taken, or in which you are currently enrolled.
Copies of transcripts may be uploaded into the online application system for review by the Admissions Committee.
Official transcripts must be submitted to CEHD Student Services by the end of student’s first semester of registration in the M.Ed. Leadership in Education for International Educators program. Official transcripts must be received from the issuing school in a sealed and stamped envelope, and mailed to:

A résumé including professional practice and leadership experiences.
A one page statement describing your career goals and rationale for your interest in the M.Ed. program.
Two letters of recommendation are required as part of your application (One letter from an administrator and one letter from a teaching colleague preferred.) Please follow the directions for submitting letters of recommendation in the online application.
Application fee of US$55.00 when your online application is submitted. The application fee must be paid with a credit card. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover.

For the 2011 cohort, the total tuition cost of this 30 credit master’s degree program is US$23,250. Students will be charged a tuition fee of US$2,350 per course. A tuition billing statement will be generated for each course and sent to the student.
