About the Program

Our program is built on a well established and comprehensive model of counseling within a school setting, as developed by the American School Counseling Association (ASCA) and is specifically tailored to train individuals to meet the counseling demands and needs within schools, both locally and in the regional settings.

- Faculty from the Department of Counseling, School and Educational Psychology which has been ranked top 10 most productive counseling psychology departments in the U.S. based on their scholarly research

- Other U.S. faculty who are well-established leaders in school counseling, or are well-known authors in the U.S. counseling field and have expertise in working with children, adolescents and their families

• Consist of 13 courses, most of which will be taught in a 2-week intensive modular format over 18 – 24 months.

• Supervision of 400 hours field experiences (as required by MOE) provided by highly qualified local Singapore professionals and augmented by online supervision by UB faculty

Program Objectives

The 42-credit hour degree program seeks to equip current and potential school counselors locally and regionally with advanced knowledge and specialized skills for:

• Implementing a comprehensive model of school counseling which aims to ensure the academic, career and personal/social development of all students.

• Providing responsive services that deal with immediate concerns of students such as individual counseling, crisis counseling, grief counseling and family crisis.

• Implementing effective counseling strategies for youths with special needs and mental health issues such as eating disorders, autism, ADHD, anxiety disorder and severe behavioral and emotional issues.

• Applying a diverse repertoire of helping strategies and techniques such as individual and group counseling and classroom guidance in working with youth.

• Applying appropriate collaborative and counseling strategies in working with families and other school personnel.

• Developing and implementing prevention education programs such as conflict resolution, anti-bullying, values programs and providing leadership in creating a positive school climate.

• Generating outcome data in order to determine the effectiveness of their programs and strategies.

 

Program Accreditation

The UB School Counseling program is fully approved by the New York State Education Department. The University at Buffalo is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools and is a member of the Association of American Universities, an elite group of 62 research universities.

Curriculum

Teacher: Student ratio: average of 1:20

Duration of course: 13 modules taken over a 18-24 month period

Course configuration: Students undertake seven six-week modules with one week intensive face-to-face teaching by faculty; four interactive online courses; two semester-long courses of field experience. Included in the curriculum are 6 week courses with 2 weeks pre-course readings and assignments using electronic Blackboard, reviewing of videos, followed by a nine-day face to face sessions, and two weeks for completion of assignments etc.

 

 Mode of Delivery

All courses are face-to-face except for three online courses (Human Growth & Development, Counseling with Children and Adolescents, Introduction to Statistical Research).

 

Fieldwork and Practicum

For field work and practicum, the total accumulated over the one-year attachment in schools should be 400 hours in total, with 120 hours of actual counseling hours (including group, individual counseling and classroom guidance) with students. This means students are required to spend 10 to 12 hours on site (which is approximately 2 days a week in a school setting) under the supervision of a qualified school counselor supervisor. Students also meet for weekly clinical supervision at CAE with UB appointed group supervisor. Students are required to keep time logs, complete weekly journals and present a total of 4 recordings of their sessions with their client to their group supervisor.

Graduation Requirements  

Upon successful completion of the face-to-face, online modules, practicum and Portfolio/Comprehensive Exam, the student will be awarded an Education Master degree from the University at Buffalo, SUNY.

Entry Requirements

Entry to the program is highly competitive, as we seek individuals with the right attributes and relevant experience with potential to contribute to the field. To qualify, you will need:

• Bachelor Degree from an accredited college or university

• Three letters of recommendation

• TOEFL scores

• Preference will be given to applicants with post-graduate training and experience in counseling and guidance

• Short-listed candidates will be required to submit to an interview with the UB Program Director

Admission Process

Apply online today in five easy steps:

1. Complete the UB online application form

2. Prepare the following documents:

a) Graduation Certificates

b) Official and original results transcripts

c) Three letters of recommendation

d) TOEFL scores

e) Updated resume

3. Submit an application fee of S$214 (inclusive of 7% GST) via crossed check, NETS, Visa or MasterCard. Crossed checks are to be made payable to CENTER FOR AMERICAN EDUCATION PTE LTD. NETS, Visa or MasterCard payment can only be made at The CAE reception desk.

4. Contact Center for American Education (CAE), Singapore – Graduate Programs at 62234566 to arrange pre-course interview/info-session and physical submission of above documents.

5. All applications and transcripts must be duly submitted before the closing date stipulated by CAE to be considered for admission in recurring intake of each academic year.
